The Genesis of the Bank of America Logo (1930 – 1969)

Although the original logo of the bank is lost, the logo during the period spanning 1930 to 1969 saw the use of a black gothic typeface featuring the name of the bank in full. Embodying the mediaeval Latin style, the letters of the wordmark showed depth, solidity, and seriousness. Although the font is ancient, its modern variant would be the Archive type from the Archive black title font family.

(1969 – 1980)

The logo iteration used during this period had the wordmark written in monochrome black. Designed by Walter Landor, the logo consisted of two parts. The first part was a stylised graphic forming the monogram “BA” on the right, where the letters “B” and “A” were merged to form a single symbol. The symbol had short horizontal bars and rounded lines. The second part was the wordmark on the left, rendered in uppercase using a custom typeface. The word “OF” in the wordmark was in small size compared to the other two words “BANK” “AMERICA”. Interestingly, the stylised graphic was bigger in size compared to the wordmark.

The logo iteration of 1980 saw the graphic formed with the letters “BA” becoming the central element. It appeared in an enlarged size and was placed above the wordmark “Bank of America,” rendered in a bold Helvetica typeface. The corners of the graphic were rounded and refined, and they had a chic appearance.

(1998 – 2018)

The 1998 logo was crafted after the merger of the Bank of America and Nations Bank. The new logo featured an abstract graphic in red and blue, similar to the American flag on the right. On the left of the logo was the blue wordmark “Bank of America” in title case and rendered in a bold sans-serif font. The abstract graphic on the right seemed to have six rectangles forming a rhombus. Inside the rhombus, the two rectangles appeared in blue, while the rest were in red, all separated by white lines. The graphic, in addition to resembling the American flag, also looked like a blanket. The blanket symbolism was meant to offer a sense of safety, protection, and warmth to the customers.

The logo iteration of 2018, which also happens to be the latest, saw the refinement of the contours of the graphic. It comprises two elements: a stylized flag shape and the Bank of America wordmark.
