The History and Evolution of the Stripe Logo

Stripe Logo Evolution

Stripe is a leading fintech company that specialises in building infrastructure for online payments and financial services.

The article explores the evolution of the Stripe logo, among other details about the company.

The Genesis of the Stripe Logo (2009 – 2016)

The original Stripe logotype features the brand name and is written using a sans-serif typeface in turquoise block lowercase. The streamlined glyphs appear so due to the rounding of the letters and the creation of a minimum of angles. Although the character spacing is minimum, the readability factor is optimal, thanks to the white background. The colour of the logo was turquoise or black.

(2016 – Present)

The 2016 logo iteration consists of a wordmark “stripe” or an icon “S”. The wordmark featuring the brand name is written using a classic custom sans-serif typeface. Interestingly, the colour used is a blend of blue and purple (blurple) makes the logo stand out, for not many competitors have purple as their logo colour. The rounded letters and smaller strokes appear to refer to the original name. Some of the letters, especially “t” and “i”, had oblique cuts to their extended parts. As far as the icon is concerned, it features the letter “S” against a square blurple background.

Font

The wordmark used in the Stripe logo is written using a grotesque customised typeface that doesn’t resemble any popular typeface. However, it has some similarities to FF Fago Black, such as the top of the letters “t” and “i” showing diagonal strokes.

Colour

The colour palette used to design the Stripe logo consists of white and purple, where each colour can be used as a background or foreground.
