Rivian Automotive, Inc., an American electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer, has emerged as a significant player in the automotive industry. Founded in 2009 by Robert “RJ” Scaringe, the company has evolved from its humble beginnings into a trailblazer in sustainable and adventure-focused electric vehicles. Rivian’s journey is marked by innovation, strategic planning, and resilience in the face of challenges.
The logo of Rivian Automotive encapsulates its ethos of innovation, sustainability, and adventure. Since its inception in 2011, Rivian’s visual identity has not undergone many changes, which reflect the brand’s growth and mission. The article delves into the logo changes for Rivian since its inception.
The Genesis of the Rivian Logo (2011 – 2018)
The initial Rivian logo after changing the name from Avera Motors retained the previous design. However, the colours and contours of the logo were brightened. The wordmark was changed to just “RIVIAN” in blue italics on a silver-grey background with a gradient.

(2018 – Present)
In 2018, Rivian unveiled its current logo alongside its formal entry into vehicle production. The new logo design features two tilted squares—one smaller inside a larger one—rotated to form a diamond- or kite-like shape. This geometric arrangement creates four arrows that symbolise different aspects of the brand.
The outer arrows represent innovation and adventure and highlight Rivian’s commitment to exploration and breaking boundaries. In contrast, the inner arrows signify inclusivity and inspiration and reflect Rivian’s goal to create vehicles for everyone while fostering sustainability.

The Elements of the Rivian Logo
Font
The wordmark features a capitalised script with semi-bold sans-serif characters that are spaced widely apart. Notably, the ‘r’ and ‘a’ characters include small cuts in their horizontal bars. This font bears a resemblance to the original script used in the 2011 logo.
Colour
In its modern iteration, the wordmark in Rivian’s logo appears in a solid black shade, which conveys a sense of authority, power, and quality. This colour choice also ensures versatility and makes it easy to apply across various backgrounds, including the bodies of vehicles.
Finally
The Rivian logo has changed just once, which is a testament to its timeless design. By combining geometric precision with symbolic depth, it effectively communicates Rivian’s adventurous spirit and commitment to sustainable innovation.
