Mastercard is a global financial corporation based in Missouri, USA, that facilitates payments between issuing or merchant banks and consumers. Established in 1966, the company is one of the largest providers of payment systems in the world. The company boasts an iconic logo—one that has evolved over the years and provides a visual identity to the brand. It was ideated at the beginning of the company’s existence and has remained more or less the same, with only a few minor adjustments made along the way. The article explores the journey of the Mastercard logo over the years.

The Genesis of the Mastercard Logo (1966 – 1979)

In the 1940s, banks recognised the need to have a convenient and secure alternative to cash for retail transactions. This led to the introduction of “like cash” card equivalents, which allowed customers to make purchases and have the charges billed to their accounts. And to manage and regulate this new payment system, a group of stakeholders came up with the concept and formed the Interbank Card Association (ICA).

The initial logo of ICA featured a lowercase “i” within a solid black circle and resembled the iconic CBS identity designed by William Golden. The wordmark “INTERBANK” was placed below the emblem. Thereafter, a better emblem was designed to show the collaboration of many American banks. It consisted of two red and orange circles overlapping each other to depict the intersection of two processes or operations. On top of the circles was mentioned the inscription “master charge” in lowercase and “THE INTERBANK CARD” beneath – all in white.

This simple and memorable logo aimed to represent the commitment of ICA to facilitating seamless and secure transactions between financial institutions. Besides, the colour palette of the logo symbolised the energy, passion, and progressiveness of the company. During this era, the ICA logo faced competition from another emerging player in the payment card industry: BankAmericard, which would later become Visa. The rivalry between these two organisations had set the stage for a competitive landscape that would shape the future of electronic payments.

(1979 – 1990)

In 1979, Master Charge underwent another logo update and refined its visual identity further. The overlapping red and yellow circles remained the centrepiece and conveyed a sense of connection, inclusiveness, and integration. These were the values the organisation embodied while continuing its expansion efforts. During this rebranding exercise, the wordmark “Master Charge” was replaced by “Mastercard” while keeping everything else unchanged.

(1990 – 1996)

With the advent of the 1990s, the Interbank Card Association transformed into Mastercard International. This reflected the global reach and influence of the company. The iconic logo continued to evolve, and subtle refinements and updates were made. For instance, the 1990 redesign gave a new colour palette to the logo, with the colour orange changed to yellow. This was done to make the logo appear more dynamic and friendly. The intersection area of the overlapping circles was shown in horizontal stripes of red and orange colours. Further, the white wordmark was changed to italics to show the progressive approach of the company.

(1996 – 2016)

During this period, the yellow colour in one of the overlapping circles was enhanced, and the number of stripes in the intersection area was reduced. This made the logo appear strict and minimalist. The wordmark “MASTERCARD” was given thin black shadows as outlines for a 3D effect. Again in 2006, the corporate edition of the logo was designed, which remained in use for a decade. Although it was similar, there were some differences as well. For instance, there was a third half-transparent circle placed above the logo, in addition to the two overlapping ones. Besides, the words “MasterCard Worldwide” were placed both in the upper and lower rows.

(2016 – 2020)

The logo designed during the period had the lowercase wordmark rendered in a sans-serif typeface. The typeface had similarities with Helios Antique Semi Bold fonts and FF Mark Std Premium. Moreover, the horizontal stripes in the intersection area of the overlapping circles were removed. Also, the name of the company was placed outside the overlapping circles, that is, at the bottom. The yellow colour of the circle was brought closer to orange.

(2019 – Today)

In 2019, the logo for electronic wallets, physical cards, marketing materials, stickers, and labels was changed by removing the wordmark “Mastercard.” In every other aspect, the logo resembled the version of 2016.

Today, the Mastercard brand emphasises the “priceless possibilities” offered by its products and services. The geometric design of the logo, along with its overlapping circles, represents the philosophy of the company. It symbolises the interconnectedness and boundless potential that Mastercard brings to the world of electronic payments and financial services.

The MasterCard logo is a masterclass in simplicity. At the core of this logo is the wordmark “Mastercard,” which has been crafted using the clean and minimalistic sans-serif typeface resembling an FF Mark typeface. The choice of this typography was to make the wordmark legible and to ensure the brand name is instantly identifiable and easily readable across various applications.

Colour
