The Genesis of the ACDelco Logo (1974 – 1995)

The original logo design of AC-Delco was a reflection of its heritage, for it combined the elements from both parent companies. The logo had a split square design in navy blue placed beside each other. The first square on the left had the wordmark “AC” in white enclosed within a red circle. And the red circle was marked by a thin white outline for contrast.

The adjacent square in navy blue incorporated a circular graphic where the upper arc appeared in navy blue while the lower arc was shown in red. And below the circular graphic was the wordmark “Delco” written in navy blue. The two-part logo design symbolised the merger of the two automobile giants. Besides, the use of red, navy blue, and white reflected the combination of purity, passion, and professionalism.

As the years passed and the new entity formed after the merger of two entities, AC-Delco recognised the need to streamline its branding and adapt to the changing market dynamics. So, in 1995, the company undertook a significant rebranding exercise, in which it changed its logo from the hyphenated “AC-Delco” to the more streamlined and modern “ACDelco.”

This rebranding exercise was accompanied by a revamped logo design, which included the removal of the hyphen and the use of a sleeker and more contemporary typeface. The new logo retained the wordmark “ACDelco” in a bold, italic sans-serif typeface but with a more uniform and cohesive appearance. It reflected the desire of the company to have a unified brand identity. The glyphs are regular, but the tiny white triangles atop the letters “A” and “D” make them appear distinct. The wordmark is accompanied by a red-coloured underline resembling the image of a swoosh, which gives the logo a dynamic feel.

The impact of this rebranding exercise extended beyond the visual aspect. In fact, it had a profound effect on the marketing and brand positioning of ACDelco. The removal of the hyphen sign signified a shift towards a more integrated and cohesive brand.

The latest logo features the brand name written in a combination of uppercase and lowercase using a sans-serif typeface. The glyphs associated with the letters are missing. The wordmark is underscored by a red stripe resembling a swoosh.

The typeface used to execute the wordmark “ACDelco” is italicised sans-serif, which adds a sense of motion to the logo. Interestingly, the letters “A” and “D” in the wordmark look unique due to the presence of the white triangles at their tips.
